The Land Rover LRX concept was revealed at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show. The LRX concept is new territory for Land Rover, a 'cross-coupe' which is more compact than the usual offerings from Land Rover. The LRX concept is more car-like than previous models, but it still retains off-road features such as full-time four-wheel-drive, Hill Decent Control, and Land Rover's Terrain Response System which optimizes traction depending on surface conditions. Conceived as a premium car, designed to appeal to new customers in the luxury and executive sector the LRX offers many of the benefits of a 4x4 and the presence of a larger vehicle, but in a more sensible package.The styling of the LRX concept uses many Land Rover traits, including the clamshell bonnet, sharp lines and wheels pushed to the far corners to reduce overhangs. The sleek, floating appearance of the roof is highlighted by
the glazing which wraps right around the LRX, leaving no exposed pillars to break up the flow.A large part of the design and engineering influence for the Land Rover LRX concept comes from the idea of sustainability, and the fuel savings created by making a more compact and aerodynamic vehicle are further complimented by the use of recycled materials such as vegetable-tanned leather, recyclable aluminium, and carpeting made from sustainable sources. Even the 'suede' on the door inserts and headliner is made from a 100% recycled material created from used plastic bottles."We are determined to make sustainability a key element in our future product design and the way we do business, while still creating vehicles that have a strong emotional appeal as well as fulfilling people's practical needs," says Phil Popham, Land Rover's managing director. "No single technology delivers all the
answers to whole-life sustainability, but the LRX concept brings together some of the ideas for the future that interest us, integrating them into a car that we believe represents an exciting way forward for Land Rover."
